Manyas, one of the important rice production centers in our country, started harvesting in May after the 120-day growing period of rice planted. The high yields in the region have pleased the producers, and they are expecting the Agricultural Products Office to make purchases in order to maintain price stability and prevent farmers from being harmed. Manyas Chamber of Agriculture President and rice producer Kudret Özden, who stated that 70,000 decares were planted last year, said:
“Our yields are quite good. I also plant rice in an area of 500-600 decares. We planted two types of rice; medium-grain (Osmancık) and large-grain (Baldo) varieties. The average yield varies between 850-900 kilograms per decares in the harvested areas. Currently, traders buy the medium-grain rice for 22-23 lira and the large-grain Baldo type for 28 lira. It would have been better if the prices were 2-3 lira higher. As irrigation areas increase in our district, rice planting also increases accordingly. However, our costs are very high; the cost of one decares ranges from 13,000 to 14,000 lira. Land rental fees vary between 4,000 and 8,000 lira per decares annually. This year, we also set the combine harvester fee at 800 lira per decares.”
Producer Ekrem Erdoğan said, “We harvest Efe type rice, the yields are good, we get yields between 800-900 kilograms, may God bless. However, our costs are very high; the cost of one acre reaches 15,000 lira. But the prices have fallen below our expectations. We were saying that it wouldn’t go below 25 liras, they are currently buying for 22.5 liras. We are waiting for the office to open. Last year, we had sold at 22 liras.”
